Jean F. Chaigneau (1830-1903) Antique Barbizon Oil Sheep Landscape Painting

This beautiful original Barbizon painting was completed on a wooden panel and signed by the artist on the lower left, JF. This impressionist painting is in very good antique condition.

Under a black light it shows no signs of paint loss, in-painting or repair. Initially, I thought there may be some slight surface abrasions in the clouds in the sky. But after inspecting the painting closer with a jeweler's loupe, it appears that there may be a few singular portions of the bristles of the paint brush that remain on the surface of the painting (see close-up image of the sky), at least that what it looks. I do not consider this to be a blemish at all, rather a part of the paintings honest history. Keep in mind, all of the pictures have been taken from approximately 1 away from the surface of the painting.

This is designed to give you the best possible, up close inspection of this painting. From a normal viewing distance you will not notice this at all. Unframed the painting measures exactly 6 1/8" in height x 8 3/4" wide and together with the contemporary gold leaf wooden frame it measures 10 1/2" x 13 1/4". The handsome frame has a depth of 1 1/4 and is in excellent condition. In 1858 he moved to Barbizon, where he met artist Charles Jacque, who further influenced Chaigneau to capture scenes in the forest of Fontainebleau, flocks of sheep in the Cailly forest, as well as the technique of etching. Chaigneau was nicknamed The Raphael of Sheep. In 1848, he showed Souvenir des Environ de Bordeaux at. The Salon and regularly thereafter. He exhibited at the Exposition Universelle and received a bronze medal. In 1870, he built his home in Barbizon, "The Pastoral", where he remained for the rest of his life.
