A realistic portrait of an Andalucian lady of Seville depicted in the classic dress of the time including tortoise shell comb, mantilla and fan. It dates to the 1880s and the senorita's fan is the Japonisme style of the Aesthetic Movement, haute couture of the period. This oil on panel is signed in the upper left - Castillo y Garces - and inscribed Sevilla and date, probably'83 or'85, it is an incised signature, done with the end of the artist's brush in the wet paint. The painting measures 9 1/4 x 6 inches, including frame approx.13 1/4 x 10 inches. There is a painting by this artist on view in the collection of the Palacio de las Dueñas, Residence of the Duchess of Alba in Seville, Spain.
