Robert W. Wood Original Painting SMOKE TREES
Condition: Very Good, a relatively recent painting. Frame: Gilded wood molding, compositional ornamentation, wrapped linen liner. Probably framed by Howard Morseburg in the 1980s. It probably dates to the early to mid-1960s. Description: The work under consideration is a landscape of the Mojave desert near Palm Springs by the artist Robert W.

For a number of years, Wood maintained a studio in Palm Springs and he painted extensively in the desert environment in the 1950s and 1960s. The focus of this composition is a pair of smoke trees, which are in the center of the painting. Before them is a rocky foreground and behind them is some foliage, clinging to the rocky soil. There is a line of foothills projecting from the left side of the painting, to the right, rendered in soft blue and green hues. The sky is light blue with some large, broken clouds.

The viewer can feel the intensity of the midday sun and the arid nature of the desert environment. About the Artist: For more than forty years, Robert W. Wood was one of Americas most famous and best-loved artists. His Promethean work ethic and immense popularity enabled him to paint more in more locations and produce more landscapes than any other artist in the history of American Art.

In publication, Robert Wood was the most popular artist of his day, replacing Maxfield Parrish, whose reproductions also graced the walls of millions of American homes. Woods landscapes of the unspoiled deserts, mountains, forests and seashores of the United States have left an indelible impression on generations of Americans and have remained popular to this day. My parents bought 5 original paintings direct from Mr. Wood back in the late 60's.

I have 5 appraisals for them dated back on 2-22-1970. I recently found a whole file of personal letters from Mr Wood to my dad. They lived about 2 blocks away from each other in Palm Springs.

Personally inspected and Appraised by Well known Fine Art Dealer and Appraiser Jeffrey Morseburg on June 28, 2012. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS APPRAISER TO ANYONE. HE LEFT MY OFFICE AND FORGOT TO STAMP THE BACK OF EACH PAINTING HE APPRAISED FOR ME AND HAS MADE A DOZEN EXCUSES NOT TO COME BACK TO MY OFFICE AND STAMP THEM.
